Using AI and Backwards Design for New and Existing Courses ***Walk-ins Welcome*** In-Person / Online
Backward design starts with the end in mind, identifying what students should learn, determining how they will demonstrate that learning, and then planning the instructional activities to get them there. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to integrate generative AI tools into each stage of the backward design process to make course creation or redesign more efficient, intentional, and student-centered. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with prompt templates, practical examples, and strategies for using AI to streamline your course design process while keeping pedagogical integrity at the forefront.
Upon completion of this learning experience, participants will be able to:
- describe how generative AI tools can support backward design in both new course development and iterative course redesign
- use AI to generate and refine clear, measurable, and appropriately leveled learning objectives, aligned with disciplinary and institutional expectations
- apply AI tools to evaluate and revise existing learning objectives for clarity, alignment, and appropriate scope
- use AI to evaluate and improve alignment between learning objectives, assessments, and instructional strategies, and identify gaps or redundancies in course design
- create or revise lesson plans and learning activities using AI, ensuring they support the defined learning objectives and course assessments
- revise outdated or unclear course materials and policies using AI to improve alignment, accessibility, tone, and student-centeredness
- reflect on how AI can enhance ongoing course improvement within a backward design framework through ideation, revision, and feedback analysis
