Free Speech on Campus: A Micro-Credential for Student Affairs Professionals

Student affairs professionals play a crucial role in supporting free speech on college and university campuses. 

This micro-credential program provides essential knowledge and skills to enhance your ability to navigate this complex area, and it is being offered at no cost to participants.

Upon completion of this learning experience, participants will be able to:

  • Understand core U.S. free speech legal concepts and their rationale
  • Apply these concepts to campus policies and procedures
  • Explore the historical context and current landscape of campus protests
  • Learn whether hate speech is a legal or social concept and why that matters
  • Identify your core values regarding campus free speech and how to apply them
  • Analyze strategies to support inclusion and free speech
  • Compare the two leading perspectives on what robust free speech means

Final Project: You'll create a unique artifact designed to enhance free speech in your specific role and campus community.

Program Structure:

  • 6 synchronous sessions will be held on Fridays at 2 – 3:30 p.m. EST beginning on January 24th and ending on February 28th
  • Approximately 1 hour of preparation per session
  • 3 hours for creating a final project

Instructed by:

Kristine Bowman, J.D., Ph.D. is a jointly appointed as a Professor of Law and Professor of Education Policy at Michigan State University, where she has taught since 2007. She is also Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs in the College of Education where she provides strategic leadership for curriculum, advising, and accreditation. Bowman is a leading education law scholar with expertise in free speech, racial/ethnic equity, and governance in the K-12 and higher education contexts.
