Teaching and Assessing Critical Thinking in the Age of AI ***Drop-ins Welcome*** Online
Many educators state that they aim to develop students critical thinking (CT) skills but feel this learning goal is being undermined when students have access and use generative AI tools during the learning process. In this session we will revisit the term critical thinking by deconstructing the multi-dimensional and discipline-specific nature of it. We will then discusses how the use of AI is shifting where CT is occurring in AI-enabled workflows and what this means for teaching, learning, and assessing CT. Lastly, we will discuss teaching and assessment strategies that includes both 1) the circumvention of AI misuse and 2) intentionally including AI in the process.
Upon completion of this learning experience, participants will be able to:
- Define critical thinking
- Examine how AI is effecting student’s thinking processes
- Explore instructional options and strategies regarding AI that includes constraining it, designing around, or integrating it
