Online Whiteboards: Enhancing Teaching, Collaboration, and Community Building Online
We will demonstrate how online whiteboards at a variety of levels of complexity can be used to effectively enhance engagement and collaboration, facilitate instructional and community-building goals, and generate useful artifacts for feedback or decisionmaking. Digital whiteboards can enhance online, hybrid, and even face-to-face classes and meetings. Thanks to a combination of stable and changeable components, and both synchronous and asynchronous participation options, online whiteboards are ideal collaboration engines. These benefits can be found in a variety of whiteboard platforms, and with a little experience and preparation, educators and meeting facilitators can take advantage of these flexible sites for collaboration even with users new to any particular program.
In our work as instructors, educator developers, and cohort facilitators, we lean on these tools for a variety of purposes, ranging from quick check-ins to complex brainstorming, co-writing, and project planning. After introducing the types of activities well-suited to online and hybrid whiteboards, we will lead participants through a variety of active demonstrations on a few whiteboard programs. No experience with online whiteboards is necessary to participate in our demonstration.
