The Best of Both Worlds: The Academic Security of In-Person Assessments and the Ease of Digital Grading

The Best of Both Worlds: The Academic Security of In-Person Assessments and the Ease of Digital Grading Online

This presentation will explore how Crowdmark has transformed grading and feedback in a large-enrollment course taught by a team of instructors. Despite having ~500 students per semester, the course maintains in-person exams with both multiple-choice and short-answer essay questions, requiring students to develop the complex skill of arguing from evidence. Managing these assessments and providing timely, high-quality feedback presents significant challenges, but Crowdmark’s streamlined workflows have improved efficiency, consistency, and collaboration within our instructional team. Additionally, students are given feedback via their email making metacognitive assignments such as performance reflections quick and convenient.

Attendees will gain insights into key Crowdmark features that enhance grading in large courses. I will discuss how Crowdmark’s unique QR codes save time and reduce errors during the exam scanning and uploading process, as well as my experience using their new non-QR coded workflow with support from the customer success team. Additionally, I’ll highlight how the collaborative grading interface, including shareable comments, enables faster and more consistent feedback. The use of grading 'tags' has further improved trend analysis and our understanding of student performance.

This session will provide practical strategies for administering and grading assessments more efficiently, offering valuable takeaways for educators handling large courses at MSU and beyond.
