Library Carpentry: Tidy Data, the Command Line, and Git Online
Do you work with data? Do you want to improve your workflows and automate repetitive, error-prone tasks? Do you want to learn to work effectively with researchers, IT, and systems colleagues? Then this is the workshop for you!
This workshop introduces three important computational skills in a library/information science context:
- Wrangling “tidy data” in spreadsheets
- Using the command line
- Tracking and sharing your work in Git and GitHub
By the end, you will learn things like best practices for cleaning and manipulating data in spreadsheets; using regular expressions to find and match data; navigating, creating files, and automating tasks on your computer using the command line; and creating a Git repository to easily explore and share different versions of your work.
No prior experience is necessary! While the content in this workshop is primarily targeted to those in library and information science roles, it is open to learners at all stages: staff, faculty, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students, and beyond. This is an official Library Carpentry workshop and will follow its style and curriculum to provide a welcoming and interactive environment for learning the basics of research computing.
Schedule: This four-day, virtual workshop will run November 10-13, 1:00–5:00 PM each day. Details about the curriculum will be shared as the dates get closer.
Registration is required and closes on October 31, 2025, at 9pm. If you have questions, contact Craig Gross at grosscra@msu.edu or Justin Wadland at wadlandj@msu.edu.
