Designing a Dynamic Syllabus In-Person / Online
Your course syllabus could be much more than a lengthy document with institutional policy and lists of readings. In this session, we will explore the creation of a liquid syllabus to help introduce and promote your course. A liquid syllabus is an informal webpage that introduces a course and the instructor(s) teaching it.
The key features of a liquid syllabus are:
- It is designed to be read on a mobile device, making it accessible to students anywhere.
- It uses welcoming and personable language to help create a connection between the instructor and students before the course even begins.
- It emphasizes important course information like requirements and affordability (e.g. low textbook costs).
- It aims to humanize the instructor and course, helping to build trust and a sense of belonging for students, especially those from non-majority groups.
- It can help ease student anxiety, make a positive first impression, and set students up for success in the course.
Upon completion of this learning experience participants will be able to:
- Identify key components of an effective liquid syllabus
- Plan and outline their own liquid syllabus
- Utilize the tools and resources needed to create their own liquid syllabus
This presentation is intended for all MSU educators, particularly those eager to create engaging syllabi.
