“Do I really Need a Data Management Plan?” Yes! Introduction to Data Management Plans for Research Proposals In-Person
An overview of why data managament plans are important and often required, and how to develop one.

- Data management plans are becoming more frequently required when submitting a proposal for research funding.
- Funding agencies/institutions may not accept proposals that do not include at least an introductory DMP
By planning the management of your research data at proposal time it is possible to:
- Secure funding specifically for research data management
- Improve the impact and visibility of your research
- Improve and standardize data management practice and policy in your lab
- Facilitate collaboration, increase research efficiency, and make new discoveries
What does my DMP need to look like?
While not all agencies have identical requirements the following is a list of common elements that have been required:
Your Data Management Plan will need to cater to your research, domain, and available resources. However, any project which generates a significant amount of digital research data should include a Data Management Plan. We can assist with your draft to ensure it meets your agency guidelines as closely as possible.
- General DMP Template:
- A general description of the data
- A claim that expresses the value and impact of these data
- A specific description of the content and format of data
- Any provisions for protection of data
- Any restrictions on access
- A specific description of the preservation environment
- What resources are available to help me (examples, templates, the DMP Tool, review of your DMP plan, Specific assistance with specialized funding agency requirements, format of the DMP elements, short-term storage and long-term repository recommendations, etc.)?
