“Do I really Need a Data Management Plan?” Yes! Introduction to Data Management Plans for Research Proposals

“Do I really Need a Data Management Plan?” Yes! Introduction to Data Management Plans for Research Proposals In-Person

An overview of why data managament plans are important and often required, and how to develop one.

Is this something I really need?

  • Yes
  • Data management plans are becoming more frequently required when submitting a proposal for research funding.
  • Funding agencies/institutions may not accept proposals that do not include at least an introductory DMP

By planning the management of your research data at proposal time it is possible to:

  • Secure funding specifically for research data management
  • Improve the impact and visibility of your research
  • Improve and standardize data management practice and policy in your lab
  • Facilitate collaboration, increase research efficiency, and make new discoveries

What does my DMP need to look like?

While not all agencies have identical requirements the following is a list of common elements that have been required:

Your Data Management Plan will need to cater to your research, domain, and available resources. However, any project which generates a significant amount of digital research data should include a Data Management Plan. We can assist with your draft to ensure it meets your agency guidelines as closely as possible.

  • General DMP Template:
    • A general description of the data
    • A claim that expresses the value and impact of these data
    • A specific description of the content and format of data
    • Any provisions for protection of data
    • Any restrictions on access
    • A specific description of the preservation environment

  • What resources are available to help me (examples, templates, the DMP Tool, review of your DMP plan, Specific assistance with specialized funding agency requirements, format of the DMP elements, short-term storage and long-term repository recommendations, etc.)?

  • MSU Libraries
  • Sponsored Programs Administration
  • Office of Research and Innovation
  • Research Cyberinfrastructure
