Codetermination vs. Managerialism: Intellectuals, Workers, and Democracy in 1950s West Germany
Sean Forner, MSU Dept. of History
West Germany is widely known for a distinctive model of industrial relations: codetermination, or workers’ right to participate in firms’ economic affairs. This talk explores the convergence between the unions’ early, radical “struggle for codetermination,” and intellectual diagnoses of the broader threat of “managerialism,” which generated a period of remarkable contestation over the relation of democracy at work to democracy writ large.
