Can I Zoom In? Low-Barrier Tactics for Ad Hoc Hybrid Class Arrangements In-Person / Online
What do you do if a student requests to zoom in to your class, due to illness, travel, or for other reasons, when the course is not designated or designed as a hybrid course? Some course instructors permit virtual student access to their in-person courses, allowing them to continue to learn and participate with their peers. How can such an “ad hoc hybrid” class function smoothly? What technologies and tactics can support learning and interactions under these conditions? And what are the costs and benefits that instructors should keep in mind while deciding whether to allow students to zoom in? In this interactive session, two educational developers from MSU's Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation will demonstrate and lead participants through several easy ways to adapt course activities to allow synchronous, hybrid student participation. Using MSU tech tools including zoom chat, polls, reactions, and breakout rooms; google docs and slides; online whiteboards; word clouds; and D2L, we will focus on low-barrier ways that instructors can translate effective in-person activities for virtual students. Participants will have the opportunity to share tactics that have worked in their own courses and discuss the costs and benefits of increasing virtual access to course environments. The session will conclude with a QnA and connection to further educator resources from MSU and from the CTLI. No prior experience with these technologies is required.
Upon completion of this learning experience, participants will be able to:
- learn to design and modify course activities that effectively accommodate both in-person and virtual students
- gain practical experience using a variety of tech tools to facilitate synchronous learning across modalities
- be equipped to evaluate the potential costs and benefits of allowing virtual participation classes designated to be in-person
The in-person location for this session is the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation. Please join us in the Main Library, Room W207 (Training Room 1). For directions to Room W207, please visit the Room Locations page.
