DAVID STOWE - MSU Religious Studies
The Musical Tanner: Negotiating Work, Music, and Belief in Revolutionary Boston
William Billings was simultaneously a leather tanner and the first major composer in North America. Several of his over 300 psalms, hymns and other compositions continue to be sung into the present. A lifelong member of Boston’s South End working-class; Billings was an active supporter of the revolutionary movement and was a companion of Samuel Adams.
