The MSU Community's Involvement in the American Civil War: A University Archives Pop-up In-Person
The start of the American Civil War in 1861 affected the people of Michigan Agricultural College, later known as MSU. Students enlisted to serve in the Union Army, and while some came back to campus to finish their studies, others died fighting. Stop by and learn about the community's role in the events of the time: how the first graduating class of MSU in 1861 asked to be excused from graduation so they could enlist in the army; Professor Robert Kedzie’s contributions to science after the war; and how the horse that helped in the capture of John Wilkes Booth became a popular MSU Museum exhibit.
