Preparing for Fieldwork in Archives (Part 2 of 2) (online) In-Person

This two-day workshop is designed to help prepare graduate students and faculty conducting fieldwork in archives as a part of, or the whole of, their research. The sessions will first explain what archives are, how they work, and the theory and methods behind acquisition, processing, and accessibility of archival materials. Participants will then learn how to find archives, to search their holdings, and to read a finding aid, and tips will be given on how to request, use, and collect material. The second day will also include a session on research data management, or organizing all the information you find, led by Data Librarian, Scout Calvert.

The workshop will include a session on digitized and open access archives (including a discussion on the pros and cons of these archives for scholars) and a final session on the ethics of archives, particularly relevant for researchers working in subaltern archives (but also arguably important for all scholars). The workshop will also include strategies for how to partner and work side-by-side with the creators or stewards of the materials being used for research, including a discussion of grant opportunities for such initiatives.

Readings for the workshop are available in the workshop LibGuide, http://libguides.lib.msu.edu/c.php?g=728426, and required readings must be completed prior to participation.

The workshop is open to all graduate students or faculty who intend, or are considering, undertaking fieldwork in archives. The two-day workshop will take place ONLINE from 1-4pm on July 29th and 30th. Zoom information will be sent to registered participants the day before the workshop begins.

Registration required: https://bookings.lib.msu.edu/calendar/events/archivesworkshopjuly. Registration is capped at 12 participants.
