SUMMARY:Visualizing the Gregory Archive: Using Digital Humanities Methods to Support Learning and Build Community
DESCRIPTION:Art History Professor Jon Frey and Graphic Design Professor
Rebecca Tegtmeyer will share a recent collaboration they facilitated with
students utilizing the images archived in the Gregory Archive. These images
document various aspects of archaeological fieldwork\, art and architecture
of the classical and Byzantine periods as well as daily life in various
communities in the Mediterranean in the second half of the 20th century.
The size and diversity of the collection is vast and hinders both discovery
and the kind of sustained engagement that is needed to make it useful to
those interested in post-classical antiquity. Students were challenged to
develop both static and interactive visualizations to demonstrate the
diversity and utility of the archive. This project serves as an example of
how other digital humanities collections might re-imagine the scholarly
affordances of an open access archive.
