From Numbers to Insight: Quantitative Approaches for Classroom Research

From Numbers to Insight: Quantitative Approaches for Classroom Research In-Person / Online

Looking for ways to measure the impact of your instructional strategies using real data? This hands-on workshop introduces educators to quantitative methods in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), with a focus on collecting, organizing, and interpreting data from everyday classroom settings. Participants will explore common sources of quantitative data such as assignment performance, survey scales, attendance, engagement, etc and learn how to design basic research studies using tools they already have access to. The session will also cover strategies for analyzing and interpreting descriptive statistics, identifying patterns, and understanding the role of comparison groups, pre/post testing, and simple inferential techniques. Through examples of published SoTL projects and practical activities, you'll gain confidence in using data to answer meaningful questions about student learning in your course.

Upon completion of this learning experience, participants will be able to:

  • explain the role of quantitative methods in SoTL and the types of questions they best address
  • identify common sources of quantitative data in classroom research (e.g., exam scores, assignment grades, attendance, pre/post assessments, survey scales, D2L Data)
  • describe basic research designs used in SoTL, such as comparisons across sections, pre/post tests, or control/intervention models
  • apply strategies for organizing and analyzing quantitative data using accessible tools (e.g., Excel, SPSS, or survey tools)
  • interpret basic descriptive statistics (means, percentages, frequency) and consider simple inferential approaches (e.g., t-tests, correlations)
  • evaluate examples of published SoTL projects that use quantitative methods effectively
  • recognize limitations and ethical considerations in classroom-based quantitative research, including data privacy and sample size issues.
